Immense clouds of choking white full-throttle smoking rubber from the very first riff... Incredible...nice Vince licks on Promised Land...searing Wang Dang, I guess Bobby finally has that slide thing figured out...the first new song is a typical Hunter/Garcia effort with plenty of room to stretch...Jerry really uncorks one on Lucy....new Phil song!!!! - - if he starts getting into this, WATCH OUT...it has a solid, driving rhythm though the Dylan-like lyrics are still a bit unintelligible. The second set brings on some absolutely fantastic fireworks...killer Sat. Nite...rockin Mississippi...other-worldly Estimated/He's Gone...Wheel/Watchtower/Sugar Mag way over the edge but completely in control - - expanding that envelope yet again...Total Satisfication, and there's still two more to go!!the Hot Streak continues....Bobby is a man on a mission, delivering a continuous stream of clean, piercing blows..Peggi-o is vivid and picturesque...Walkin Blues is down and dirty...Jerry shuffles neatly for Ramble...and finally, what we have been eagerly anticipating, a Vince song!! Easily the best new tune yet - - a bluesy rocker that has the boys jammin and the crowd roaring its full approval....the set closes with what appears to be a fairly weak Bobby effort for new music but, per a Mickey interview the next morning, the band just made it up on the spot!! How's that for the artistic leap of faith?? Under those conditions, it was pretty damn amazing!!! There is no way a China>Rider>Playin>Terrapin is ever going to be anything but excellent and this was way beyond that...Miracle finds the Machine screaming ahead with the raw speed and incredible grip of a McLaren V-12 at full song...Stella is seamless, exquisitely probing and reconnecting the subconscious wiring....just when you start to think that Throwin>Not Fade is getting to be a tiresome ending combo, they go and pull some shit like this...KA-POWWWWW!! Throwin has Bobby out of his skull, thrashing it for all it is worth....Phil blows out the bottom and a manic fervor sweeps the scene...Not Fade Away takes a sharp turn toward sheer madness when Jerry just rips the freaking lid right off and releases all those impassioned demons straight from the fiery furnaces of Rock and Roll Hades.....the battle is engaged and the music warriors lay waste to the marauding hordes...in-fucking- credible.....
Mardi Gras Celebration...The opening act is a local, all-female electronic percussion group called D'Cuckoo...long tresses and leather mini-skirts pounding away in an amazing rhythmic groove....Jerry in superb form on Touch...Stranger is stretched way beyond reasonable expectation...the waves of sound and energy crash unceasingly on the beaches of awareness - the tide is definitely in....Aiko brings on the parade of floats, led by a bedazzling Engine 99 and highlighted by the appearance of a 8-foot Bart Simpson jack-in- the-box.....then things REALLY get wild...the second pass at Corrinna is much tighter, the feeling of new creativity rises to fever pitch....they dance around the edges of The Other One, but before the drum break???? Sure enough, the tension is too strong and Phil launches a MAJOR booming intro - - YOWZAAAA!!! Long intro jam and the first verse then finds its way to Vince and his piercing vocal, and keyboard, style....this guy has definitely made his mark....it all gets kind of hazy now - - Life in the Zone at Warp 10.....The Machine has now reached operating conditions that can't be described, predicted, or even conceived prior to its execution...yet the underlying structure and process reveals an incredible dynamic configuration that is so precisely tuned and flexible that the possibilities are only beginning to be investigated.....Stay Tuned for further developments as they transpire........
