ISE Campers - September 2003
Well, the load of camera equipment wasn't any lighter this year...a fact
driven home each air-starved step up the 2000ft climb to base camp. Enough to
get me thinking about a Contax G2 rangefinder system for next year - the photo gods
and eBay willing. But as always, the results were worth the effort and
another trip to Reality Junction was everything we could have asked for - and much,
much more.
Pertinent Details: South Warner Wilderness is located in the far northeast corner
of California, close to the Oregon and Nevada borders. This area is actually the
southern end of the Cascade Range, not the northern end of the Sierra Nevada Range.
Our base camp was at Patterson Lake, a rock-strewn bowl at 9000ft
in the shadow of Warren Peak. The lake straddles a long north-south ridgeline that
provides extensive views in all directions. On our day hikes we were able to see
both Lassen Peak and Mt. Shasta to the west, the Oregon Cascades to the north, and
the
dry lake beds of Nevada to the east....incredible.
The Cosmic Jokester had its way by greeting us on the first morning at base camp
with a honest-to-gosh howling wind blizzard. It soon devolved to a day of blustery
rain and tent floor leakage tests but after the hike in, a day in the sack wasn't
the worst thing. The next morning dawned a frosty clear-blue and for the rest of
the trip the skies were gloriously Perfect.
Once again, we had More Fun than is probably legal most places these days. But we
are, after all, Professionals...and there can be no concession or compromise in
the Dedicated
Pursuit
of Happiness and
Enlightenment.
Enjoy!
