So this year I wanted to try something different...perhaps even someplace warm and wet [per multiple requests]. I have always wanted to make a trek into the desert, but unless we wanted to pack in a week's worth of water, it was pretty much out of reach. But - a lake in the desert could do the job quite nicely. Pertinent Details: Lake Mead National Recreation Area encompasses 1.5 million multi-use acres including: 110-mile-long Lake Mead, 67-mile Lake Mohave, and the surrounding deserts. Down the Colorado River south of Hoover Dam, Lake Mohave is comparatively narrow, not more than four miles across at its widest point, while straddling the Nevada/Arizona border its entire length. There are hundreds of beaches that can only be accessed by boat. In the summer, boaters seek out their own private beach site for a base camp from which they can swim, hike and relax. And what better way to find our own private beach site than with a fully-rigged 59-foot Deluxe Houseboat, based out of Cottonwood Cove Marina half-way down the western side of the lake. Three of America's four desert ecosystems--the Mojave, the Great Basin and the Sonoran Deserts--meet in this area. As a result, this seemingly barren area contains a surprising variety of plants and animals, some of which may be found nowhere else in the world. Indeed, we saw more varied wildlife than on many of our trips into the mountains...raptors, burros, quail, owls, and a real live bobcat. Itamar did a great job of capturing the encounters - be sure to check out his pix, as well. Yup, it was certainly warm [100+] and wet [swim call a mere water slide away] and we had more fun than is probably legal most places. Highly Recommended. Funny how quickly we adjusted from a week of fine living in the backcountry to a week of extravagant living in the desert. But hey, that's how we roll. We are, after all, Professionals. Enjoy!
