ISE Campers - September 2009
Hoover Wilderness
Shamrock Lake

Back to the High Sierra this time, revisiting an area where we did our first backcountry adventures over twenty years ago. Back then we camped closer to Mount Conness - this time its peaks and glacier provided a dramatic backdrop to our high country camp.

Pertinent Details: Shamrock Lake is located in the 20 Lakes Basin area of southern Hoover Wilderness (about 9,000 acres), which is administered by the Inyo National Forest. The trailhead at Saddlebag Lake [just east of the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite] is serviced by a convenient water taxi that cuts a couple miles off the inbound hike...very nice.

The Hoover Wilderness is characterized by rugged mountains, alpine lakes and rushing streams. Much of the area is at or above treeline, so the vistas in the glacier-carved canyons can be quite expansive. It is the home of deer, bear, bobcat, coyote, and the occasional mountain lion...but the most fierce thing we saw was a mother White-tailed Ptarmigan protecting her chicks.

Though the first couple nights were a bit on the frosty side, the weather gods blessed us once again with ridiculously perfect conditions. We explored and relaxed and hiked and fished and laughed and had way more fun than any number of monkeys in a barrel.
